What is Deconstruction?

Deconstruction is the comprehensive dismantlement of building components for re-use, recycling and waste management.  Deconstruction has also been defined as "construction in reverse."

The process of dismantling structures is an ancient activity that has been revived by the growing field of sustainable building.

Buildings, like everything, have a life cycle.

Deconstruction focuses on giving materials within a building a new life once the building as a whole can no longer continue.

The Economics of Deconstruction

Deconstruction offers financial incentives over traditional demolition including:

  • Reusing harvested material on site in new construction projects
  • Donating materials can provide tax benefits
  • Avoid landfill tipping fees
  • Reduce transportation costs of new materials
  • Enhance the local economy by fostering business creation and job retention
  • Satisfy various site and materials credits within third party rating systems (such as the US Green Building Council)

Why deconstruct?

  • Provide building materials a new life cycle
  • Reduce the need for virgin raw materials
  • Lower energy consumption  and reduce emissions from manufacturing & distribution of new materials
  • Divert "waste" materials from landfills to recycling
  • Foster new business creation and job growth opportunities
